US returns radiation-contaminated footwear to Indonesia
The US has returned two containers of Indonesian footwear found contaminated with radioactive cesium-137, adding shoes to a growing list of Indonesian exports flagged for radiation, including shrimp and cloves. Indonesian authorities say the products came from a company located near an industrial park in western Java where a small steel plant is believed to have accidentally smelted scrap metal mixed with cesium, contaminating nearby factories.
