We are saddened to report the death of Thomas Schneider, founder and executive chairman of ISA TanTec, the leather manufacturing group. He passed away at the age of 70 on January 18 from complications following a car accident in Germany.

In the early 1980s, Tom Schneider completed his leather manufacturing training at the prestigious Lederinstitut Geberschule in Reutlingen. His career quickly became international, taking him first to Australian tanneries before he relocated to China in 1988.

Describing himself as a serial entrepreneur, Schneider founded ISA TanTec, a proud LHCA member, in 1993. Over three decades, he transformed it into a global enterprise operating five production facilities across China, Vietnam, the United States and Italy.

A Pioneer in Sustainability

Schneider was ahead of his time in recognizing the need for efficiency in the name of environmental responsibility in leather manufacturing. As early as 2004, he championed efforts to reduce energy, water and chemical consumption to minimize environmental impact. He branded these innovations under the name LITE (low impact on the environment), introducing collections that would set standards the industry later embraced widely.

Thomas Schneider's vision, leadership, and dedication to sustainable manufacturing have left an enduring mark on the leather industry. His legacy lives on through the company he built and the practices he championed.
