APHIS announced the United Kingdom will continue to accept European Union Health Certificates for products from the U.S. through September 30, 2021. Plus, the 2021 Real Leather. Stay Different. International Student Design Competition will soon crown a winner, as the contest enters its final days. Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending June 17, 2021, were 388,400 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 208,400 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 343,900 and of wet blue were 128,600. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Italy was the largest destination for wet blue. See more.   • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 661,000 last week, a decrease of 0.3 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 16,081,000 head, up 5.4 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for nine types of U.S. hides at 14 price points with a spread of $22 for branded cows to $60 for heavy native steers. See more.

Industry Updates

  • The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced that the United Kingdom will continue to accept current European Union model Health Certificates for exports from the U.S., including hides exports, that are endorsed by September 30, 2021. Endorsements on or after October 1, 2021, must use the new Great Britain Health Certificates, which are available here, and will be posted on the APHIS website in the coming weeks.   • The National GS1 Traceability Advisory Group is hosting a virtual open industry briefing session titled, "Global Traceability and Sustainability for Textiles and Leather." The webinar, which will be held July 20, 2021, will discuss how improving transparency and traceability has become a priority for the textile and leather industries to manage value chains more effectively, identify and address labor and human rights violations, combat counterfeits, reduce environmental impacts and handle reputational risks, while embracing more sustainable production and consumption. Maria Teresa Pisani from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe will lead the discussion, along with key Australian textile and leather industry representatives.   • The Sustainable Leather Foundation (SLF) will host two in-person workshops July 12 (Santa Croce) and 15 (Arzignano) in Italy that will introduce attendees to ways the organization is supporting the global leather industry. Workshop participants will learn about SLF's Transparency Dashboard, Audit Standard and Collaboration Hubs. More information, including registration details, is available here.

Latest Updates from Real Leather. Stay Different.

Last week, Real Leather. Stay Different. announced the 10 finalists for its International Student Design Competition out of more than 400 entrants, spanning from Argentina to Vietnam and Estonia to Sri Lanka. The finalists' designs, selected by a world-renowned judging panel, range from leather patchwork jumpsuits, molded handbags and delicate jewelry to structured leather overcoats, intricately stitched jackets and extravagant hats. Cattle on feed

 

  • Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market as of June 1, 2021, totaled 11.7 million head. The inventory was slightly above June 1, 2020. Read the report here.
  • The Monthly Livestock Slaughter report is now available. May 2021 cattle slaughter totaled 2.7 million head, up 18 percent from May 2020. Review a summary of the data here
