Industry Updates

  • LHCA and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding, joining forces to collaborate on a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices in the U.S. leather industry. Read more.
  • LHCA will host its 2nd Annual Meeting and Convention October 14-15, 2021, in a hybrid format, with both a virtual component and in-person meeting at the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. 
    • To register to attend the meeting either in person or virtually, click here

  • President Biden nominated Elaine Trevino, president of the Almond Alliance of California, to serve as Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. More here.
  • More than 70 agriculture associations, including LHCA, urged the Biden Administration to take immediate action to relieve the ongoing shipping crisis facing American exporters, and outlined a series of near-term solutions in this letter. LHCA also signed a letter in support of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2021. 
  • President Biden released an updated COVID-19 plan, mandating vaccinations for certain sectors and directing the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to issue an Emergency Temporary Standard that is expected to require companies that employ more than 100 people to require either vaccination of those employees or a weekly negative COVID-19 test. Additional details are forthcoming. 

Monthly Drought Monitor - September 2021

This U.S. Drought Monitor week saw continued improvement in conditions across drought-stricken areas of the Central and Northern Plains states as well as in Iowa and Minnesota where light-to-moderate rainfall accumulations were observed. Despite recent precipitation in the Northern Plains, hay shortages and the associated costs of purchasing and transporting supplemental feed are forcing some ranchers to sell livestock. Read more.

Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending September 2, 2021, were 398,900 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 2,100 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 350,000 and of wet blue were 64,500. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Italy was the largest buyer of wet blue. See more.   • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 577,000 last week, a decrease of 7.5 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 23,043,000 head, up 3.8 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for six types of hides at six price points, with a spread of $18 for branded southwest cows to $61.50 for native steers. See more.
