- LHCA held its 2nd Annual Meeting and Convention October 14-15, 2021, in a hybrid format, with both a virtual component and in-person meeting at the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The event featured LHCA association business meetings, including a Board of Directors meeting, along with a General Session that boasted an exciting lineup of speakers who discussed a wide array of topics from media engagement and marketing activities to sustainability and climate issues. Meeting recordings and presentations will soon be available for those who attended the event.

Monthly Drought Monitor - October 2021
A long wave trough resulted in seasonal to below-normal temperatures across the western third of the contiguous U.S. (CONUS). A ridge of high pressure dominated the eastern two-thirds of the CONUS leading to above-normal temperatures, with the highest positive anomalies across the Northern Plains and Midwest. - The Biden Administration recently unveiled efforts to address vessel congestion at Southern California ports and improve the flow of both inbound and outbound products that utilize ocean transport. A fact sheet outlining the initiatives is available here.
- U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai last week delivered remarks focused on improving the World Trade Organization, including the need for changes to reform the WTO's dispute settlement process. Read her speech here.
Weekly Hides and Skins Stats
- Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending October 7, 2021, were 256,800 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 54,100 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 344,800 and of wet blue were 130,400. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and was the largest destination for wet blue. See more. - U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 646,000 last week, a decrease of 1.7 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 26,277,000 head, up 3.2 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
- USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for two types of hides at two price points, with a spread of $32 for Colorado branded steers to $36 for heavy Texas steers. See more.
