The winners of LHCA's Real Leather. Stay Different. Student Design Competition in China were celebrated at a glamourous award ceremony last week in Xinji. Winners were selected from 800 entries and received the unique opportunity to exhibit their creative designs during a highly-attended fashion show, that drew government officials, fashion experts and designers. Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending July 8, 2021, were 337,300 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 261,000 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 284,300 and of wet blue were 123,500. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Vietnam was the largest buyer of wet blue. See more.   • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 653,000 last week, an increase of 13.6 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 17,938,000 head, up 4.7 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for five types of hide at five price points, with a spread of $22 for both branded southwest cows and branded cows to $57 for butt branded steers. See more.

Industry Updates

  • LHCA announced the winners of the Real Leather. Stay Different. Student Design Competition in China. The winners were celebrated July 7 during an awards ceremony held in Xinji. More than 300 high-profile guests attended the ceremony, which was complemented by a fashion show and product demonstration featuring the finalists' leather designs. An esteemed judging panel consisting of renowned Chinese designers and leather experts selected Jingtian Luo and Liwei Cao of Northeast Electric Power University as the contest's winners out of more than 800 entries from 23 universities.   • Mexico is in the process of revising its regulations for U.S. hide imports. The U.S. Department of Agriculture published this report encouraging exporters to work with their customs broker, Mexican importer and customer, among others, to ensure compliance with the new requirements, once they are finalized and published. LHCA remains closely involved in this process and will continue to share updates with members once they are available. In the meantime, please contact Michael Schumpp with any questions or if you experience any challenges moving product to Mexico.

  • LHCA joined a broad coalition of business groups last week warning U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai that imposing tariffs on Vietnam in response to a pair of trade investigations involving currency and illegal logging practices would be a costly strategic mistake. Read the letter here.
  • The Federal Maritime Commission and Department of Justice have agreed to bolster cooperation between the agencies on antitrust issues related to the container shipping industry. Read the memorandum of understanding between the two regulatory agencies here.
