Industry Updates

  • LHCA will host its 2nd Annual Meeting and Convention October 14-15, 2021, in a hybrid format, with both a virtual component and in-person meeting at the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.

  • USDA issued a Federal Order suspending the interstate movement of all live swine, swine germplasm, swine products and swine byproducts from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to the mainland U.S. as part of its efforts to establish an African Swine Fever protection zone in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) announced steps it will take to enhance oversight of demurrage and detention practices, including plans to solicit public comments on whether ocean carriers and terminal operators should include certain minimum information in demurrage and detention billings.   • The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach announced expanded night and weekend gate hours in an effort to reduce congestion and maximize cargo throughput capacity. More information is available here
  • China formally applied to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, the trade pact signed by 11 countries in 2018. The U.S. withdrew from the agreement's predecessor, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, in 2017. More here.

Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending September 9, 2021, were 277,400 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 199,300 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 422,300 and of wet blue were 219,500. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Italy was the largest buyer of wet blue. See more.   • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 660,000 last week, an increase of 14.4 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 23,700,000 head, up 3.7 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for six types of hides at six price points, with a spread of $18 for branded southwest cows to $41 for both heavy Texas steers and Colorado branded steers. See more.
