Other News

  • Organic producers and handlers can now apply for U.S. Department of Agriculture funds to assist with the cost of receiving or maintaining organic certification as part of the Organic Certification Cost Share Program. Read more.
  • The Occupational and Health Administration issued updated guidance regarding protecting unvaccinated workers from COVID and regarding fully vaccinated workers located in areas of substantial or high community transmission. More here.
  • The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative released a readout from its recent meeting with the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committees for Trade. LHCA's Steve Sothmann and Michael Schumpp sit on this Committee. Read a summary of the meeting here.
  • LHCA signed a letter urging the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Read the letter here.

Monthly Data

  • The Monthly Livestock Slaughter report is now available. July 2021 cattle slaughter totaled 2.85 million head, down 2 percent from July 2020. Review a summary of the data here.
  • Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market as of August 1, 2021, totaled 11.1 million head. The inventory was 2 percent below August 1, 2020. Read the report here.

Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending August 12, 2021, were 190,400 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 113,000 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 357,200 and of wet blue were 148,000. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Italy was the largest destination for wet blue. See more.   • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 665,000 last week, an increase of 4.6 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 21,188,000 head, up 4.2 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for five types of hides at five price points, with a spread of $21 for branded southwest cows to $53.50 for Colorado branded steers. See more.
