- LHCA forcefully condemned Volvo's recent announcement that its new, electric models will feature entirely leather-free interiors. LHCA's statement affirms that leather is the ultimate bio-based, natural, recycled material.
- LHCA's 2nd Annual Meeting and Convention is just two weeks away. The event will take place October 14-15, 2021, in a hybrid format, with both a virtual component and in-person meeting at the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.

Emily Omesi, a BFA undergraduate student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, has won the inaugural Real Leather. Stay Different. International Student Design Competition, with her thought-provoking leather jacket design entitled "Bacterial Genetics," inspired by scans of infectious diseases. Attracting nearly 400 entries from 117 higher-education institutions across 36 countries, the competition encouraged the use of leather in delivering a more sustainable future. - USDA submitted a dossier to the World Organization for Animal Health detailing the actions taken to finalize a new African Swine Fever protection zone in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to protect the U.S. swine herd and to ensure the continued export of pork and pork products. More here.
Monthly Data
- The Monthly Livestock Slaughter report is now available. August 2021 cattle slaughter totaled 2.89 million head, up 3 percent from August 2020. Review a summary of the data here.
- Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market as of September 1, 2021, totaled 11.2 million head. The inventory was 1 percent below September 1, 2020. Read the report here.
Weekly Hides and Skins Stats
- Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending September 16, 2021, were 366,700 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 142,900 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 342,000 and of wet blue were 145,400. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Italy was the largest destination for wet blue. See more. - U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 641,000 last week, a decrease of 2.4 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 24,340,000 head, up 3.5 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
- USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for four types of hides at five price points, with a spread of $18 for branded southwest cows to $29 for dairy cows. See more.
