- APHIS announced that it is preparing to establish a Foreign Animal Disease Protection Zone in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, following the recent detection of African Swine Fever in the Dominican Republic, to safeguard the U.S. swine herd and ensure the industry's ability to export pork and pork products and live swine if ASF is detected in those locations. - The Biden Administration selected former Deputy Transportation Secretary John Porcari to serve as Port Envoy, a position that will address congestion and supply chain issues at U.S. ports. More here.
- U.S. agriculture exports in fiscal year 2021 are projected to reach $173.5 billion, with hide and skins exports forecast up to $900 million. Read more.
Weekly Hides and Skins Stats
- Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending August 19, 2021, were 229,600 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 121,200 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 554,300 and of wet blue were 210,800. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Vietnam was the largest buyer of wet blue. See more. - U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 651,000 last week, a decrease of 2.1 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 21,839,000 head, up 4 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
- USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for four types of hides at four price points, with a spread of $20 for branded southwest cows to $34 for dairy cows. See more.
