Industry Updates
- APLF announced that the annual APLF Leather trade show, co-located with Fashion Access, originally scheduled to take place in November 2021 has been rescheduled to March 2022 in Hong Kong due to ongoing COVID-19 travel restrictions. The show will now take place March 30 - April 1, 2022. More here.
- The North American Meat Institute, an affiliate organization of LHCA, launched the Protein PACT, which sets forth robust metrics for continuous improvement and public commitments that sustain healthy animals, thriving workers and communities, safe food, balanced diets and the environment. - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated previous guidance recommending that individuals, including those who are fully vaccinated, in areas with substantial and high COVID transmission wear a mask in public indoor settings to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant. Industry is encouraged to heed this recommendation, which can be found here.
- The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative determined it would not pursue punitive trade actions against Vietnam, which could have resulted in retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural products, in response to the country's currency practices, after the U.S. Treasury Department and the State Bank of Vietnam reached an agreement on the issue earlier last week. - LHCA signed a letter encouraging the U.S. government to play a leading role in reforming and revitalizing the WTO. Read it here.
- President Joe Biden nominated Max Vekich, a former longshoreman and Washington state legislator, to fill the seat on the Federal Maritime Commission recently vacated by Michael Khouri.
Weekly Hides and Skins Stats
- Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending July 22, 2021, were 388,600 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 52,000 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 391,100 and of wet blue were 161,100. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Italy was the largest destination for wet blue. See more. - U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 649,000 last week, an increase of 0.2 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 19,238,000 head, up 4.5 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
- USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for six types of hides at six price points, with a spread of $22 for branded southwest cows to $58.50 for butt branded steers. See more.
