The Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) continues to monitor developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is available to support members navigating this situation. APLF announced it will convene exhibitors and buyers for a virtual exhibition, slated to take place in late January 2021, that will focus on key leather markets. LHCA is seeking member input regarding the association's participation in this event. The virtual exhibit will not replace the APLF Leather and Materials + show, which is scheduled to be held in July 2021 in Hong Kong. Also, LHCA joined other agricultural organizations and businesses in calling on the incoming Biden Administration to review ongoing U.S. trade disputes and to address current tariff policies that are impeding America's economic recovery. read more

The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts exports of U.S. hides will once again decline in Fiscal Year 2021, as a result of falling global demand for leather. Also, France announced plans to proceed with levying its proposed digital services tax on large tech companies, though the U.S. is expected to retaliate against imported French goods, including leather handbags. LHCA wishes all those celebrating Thanksgiving a safe, healthy and happy holiday! Plus, the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has approved a Supplemental Order authorizing a formal investigation of ocean carriers' policies and practices related to detention and demurrage, container return and container availability. LHCA last week joined a multi-association letter urging the FMC to suspend detention and demurrage charges at several U.S. ports. read more

The Associated Press and other major U.S. media outlets have declared former Vice President Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, defeating President Donald Trump. President-Elect Biden's victory will likely have implications for trade and agricultural policy. Also, the European Union today will impose higher tariffs on $4 billion worth of imports from the U.S. in response to a long-running transatlantic trade dispute over aircraft subsidies. Major U.S. hide, skin and leather exports to Europe are not subject to these higher tariffs. Plus, the latest monthly export data is now available. read more

LHCA last week joined the global leather industry in calling on the Sustainable Apparel Coalition to suspend the score the organization applies to leather in its Higg Materials Sustainability Index, questioning the fairness and accuracy of the assessment methodologies used to determine leather's impact. LHCA also announced a new video and social series as part of its Real Leather. Stay Different. campaign aimed at showcasing the natural, sustainable and durable qualities of leather.
